My interest for urban subject has been complated in my mind for years but the particular idea of this work was forged some time in 2004 while I traveled extensively in Europe. After being in so many cities in the world, I realized that globalization has made urban landscapes everywhere similar and blurred the boundaries between them. So often, "here" can be anywhere. With this work, I have brought my vision and perspective to these urban spaces.

The architectural structures that I photographed are all maquettes made to promote real-estate developments that are being planned in China today. Some of the buildings already exist, and others will soon begin construction. When you face these models showing such a variety of different spaces and think about the life-styles associated with them, you start to wonder: is this the picture of life today? Do we really live in this kind of space and environment?

Globalization is reshaping our urban environment and our vision of contemporary life - which celebrates the “new” constantly replacing the “old.” As personal living spaces expand with the growth of income, the cityscape becomes more dense, filled up with modern buildings and high-rise towers. People live in cubes that are squeezed next to one another, separated only by thin walls. This physical proximity, instead of leading to greater closeness and intimacy between people, can often create psychological distance and loneliness.

The sculptural form of these new residential buildings, the floor plan of the apartments, and the various interior designs are all related to the inhabitants and their “individual” taste and needs. The models of these new living spaces are perfect, clean and beautiful but they are also so empty and detached of human drama. When you take these models and begin to add real life - even a single drop of it - so much changes.

This entire body of work of "Urban Fiction" is playful and fictitious - wandering between reality and fantasy. All the figures in this series are acts of me, playing different characters. This creates another paradox: “I” am real but at the same time “I” am unreal. The figures act out totally imaginative roles and fanciful stories, staged within the maquettes, their plots invented by me and visualized for these spaces. For example, “I” am a white-collar office worker brought to despair by job pressures and spiritual emptiness. Sometimes “I” am a materialistic woman enjoying a life of pleasure and dissipation. Or “I” am a young girl who, in a moment of unrestrained rage, accidentally killed her lover. Together, the resulting pictures compose an episodes, serialized narrative structure for "Urban Fiction". As a whole, these images represent the state of urban life today.

In the period of my childhood in China, skyscrapers were unattainable concepts connected to the West, viewable only in films or magazines. Today I live in the pictures I make and I, along with my compatriots, can imagine our future by bending down to examine tiny models of buildings. This, perhaps, is another reality of the "fantasies" which govern our contemporary life.

The photographs are shot both digitally and on film and manipulated, creating many layers, utilizing computer program tools.

The medium is photographic C - print.

LOS NUEVOS (?) PARTIDOS POLÍTICOS, DISNEYLANDIA Y LA SINSUSTANCIA

Casi coincidiendo con mi reciente diatriba contra la iniciativa de Almudena Grandes ( y se supone que de alguien más) alentando a través de su habitual columna en el periódico El País la creación un nuevo partido de izquierdas en España, las vicisitudes de dos formaciones políticas con tres y dos años de vida respectivamente, han venido a recordar lo difícil que resulta sustraerse al autoritarismo, cuando no a los intereses de quienes nunca se presentan a las elecciones pero siempre son los verdaderos candidatos. Y es que más acá de la crisis económica, de la financiación autonómica, o de los fichajes futboleros del Real Euro (antes, Real Madrid), la idea de crear "algo nuevo", "algo diferente y original", "algo que supere los errores del pasado", y por supuesto que "ofrezca nuevos motivos de esperanza", siempre resulta atractiva ante el cansancio o el desencanto que suele crear lo conocido, lo sabido, lo experimentado. Hablando en plata: echar el cerrojazo a la izquierda que representan el Partido Socialista e Izquierda Unida.
Ocurre sin embargo que la realidad, siempre tozuda, deja en evidencia una y otra vez, aquí y en el mismísimo extranjero (véase la vecina Francia con su reluciente partido anticapitalista), que no siempre la aparición de nuevas ofertas políticas permite superar viejos errores; todo lo contrario, casi como si de un mal endiosado se tratase, las críticas que los descreídos solemos hacer a la izquierda tradicional (su acusada tendencia al personalismo, el miedo a la democracia interna, etc) se presentan acrecentados en esas organizaciones que parecen nacer de la nada, aunque los malévolos hablen simplemente de la sinsustancia. Les cito lo que está ocurriendo con Ciutadans y Unión, Progreso y Democracia.
Ciutadans nació en Cataluña en el año 2006 como respuesta "innovadora" al nacionalismo de Convergencia y Unió y de Esquerra Republicana, pero también para combatir a la "vieja" izquierda. Tras un breve éxito inicial, en el que Ciutadans consiguió tres diputados en el Parlamento de Cataluña, este nuevo partido, que contaba con apoyos tan preclaros como los diarios El Mundo, La Razón y el ABC, la emisora episcopal COPE, y el grupo mediático Intereconomía (propiedad de un ex diputado catalán del PP), comenzó a "morir de éxito" bajo la tutela inflexible de su máximo líder, un joven llamado Albert Rivera, cuya aportación más conocida a la renovación de la actividad política partidista fue presentarse a las elecciones con un cartel en el que aparecía desnudo. Ese autoritarismo alcanzó su cenit poco antes de las pasadas elecciones europeas tras decidir unilateralmente integrarse en una candidatura llamada "Libertas", cuyos principales apoyos procedían de la extrema derecha europea. Ahora, Ciutadans vive una grave crisis interna al abandonar el partido dos de sus tres diputados en el Parlamento catalán y sentir cada vez más cerca en la nuca el aliento de su hermano de sangre UP y D.
El caso del partido de Rosa Díez es aún más claro. Tras una estrepitosa derrota como candidata a dirigir el Partido Socialista en el congreso en el que fue elegido nuevo secretario general José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, la ex consejera de Turismo del Gobierno vasco y posteriormente eurodiputada, inició una deriva hacia el llamado "nacionalismo español" que al principio hizo mucha gracia al PP, amén de contar con el apoyo de la Brigada Mediática (ya saben, El Mundo, la COPE, etc, etc) por el simple hecho de considerar que la ex socialista iba a robarle muchos votos al PSOE. Lo cierto es que no existen datos fiables sobre la procedencia de los votos que llevaron a Rosa Díez a ser elegida diputada por Madrid, pero lo que sí ha podido constatarse es que uno de los fundadores del partido, Mikel Buesa (hermano de Fernando Buesa, el dirigente socialista asesinado por ETA) acaba de abandonarlo tras acusar a Rosa Díez de "autoritaria" y de tomar decisiones sin contar con el resto de la dirección política, tal como ocurrió dos semanas atrás cuando la diputada de UP y D no solo anunciaba su oposición al cierre de la central nuclear de Garoña sino que planteaba al Gobierno de Zapatero la necesidad de crear una segunda central nuclear, es decir, Garoña 2. Junto a Buesa, han abandonado o han sido expedientados durante los últimos meses los coordinadores de UP y D en Andalucía, Aragón, Segovia, La Rioja y Zamora.
Ante esas crisis, y para comprobar que contrariamente a lo que pregonan sus propagandistas las respuestas son siempre las mismas, Ciutadans y UP y D han reaccionado de la misma forma que podría haberlo hecho cualquier otro partido de derechas o de izquierdas: "aquí no pasa nada...", "son crisis de crecimiento...", "mientras se van algunos militantes entran muchos más..." etc, etc.
Si no fuera porque todas estas historias solo sirven para incrementar la frustración y decepciones por doquier, que no contribuyen en nada al prestigio de la ya muy depauperada actividad política, y que en última instancia son el mejor de los alimentos para que los poderes ocultos manejen a su antojo a ciertos personajes, bien podría pensarse que esas "nuevas formas de hacer política" de Rosa Díez, Albert Rivera y quienes les aplauden con las orejas, no son otra cosa que una especie de dibujos animados que viven en un mundo personalista e irreal, pero sobre todo deberían llevar a la reflexión a quienes abogan por otro partido nuevo más, por otra vuelta de tuerca a la historia, para que antes de lanzarse a la piscina se tienten bien el ropaje ideológico, los entusiasmos mediáticos y los apoyos ocultos, no vaya a ser.
